Lord Reed and the UK Supreme Court pay tribute to former Justice Lord Clarke

The Court pays tribute to former Justice Lord Clark

Following the sad news of the death of former Supreme Court Justice Lord Clarke of Stone-cum-Ebony on 16 April 2026, Lord Reed paid tribute to him before the UK Supreme Court hearing today.

Lord Clarke became one of the first Justices of the Supreme Court in 2009, and the first not to have sat in the Appellate Committee in the House of Lords. He retired from the Court in 2017.

In tribute to Lord Clarke, Lord Reed said: “Those of us who worked with Tony will remember him primarily as a wonderful colleague: the kindest of men, with great humanity, a sense of humour, and a gift for friendship.”

Our thoughts are with Lady Clarke and their children and grandchildren at this sad time.
