Why Trust Matters: Panel discussion at the Supreme Court
The UK Supreme Court welcomed Law students from leading universities to a Panel event on Thursday 29 January, to discuss ‘Why Trust Matters: Public confidence in the rule of law in an age of AI and populism'. Alongside the audience of students, 250 people watched the event live on the Court’s website.

Taking part in the discussion in Courtroom 1 was the Court’s President Lord Reed, Professor Claire Hardaker from Lancaster University, and Daniel Cameron, Research Director at Ipsos; the event was expertly moderated by Dr Hannah White, CEO of the Institute for Government.
Dr Hardaker is Professor of Forensic Linguistics, specialising in deceptive and manipulative language, probing the risks and opportunities posed by AI.
Daniel Cameron carries out research for Ipsos on public trust in AI, exploring how societies can navigate the AI transition.

Dr White introduced the event by reflecting on how AI had the potential to do so many things, not least bringing vast amounts of information to the fingertips of legal users; but she questioned how accuracy might be maintained, as well as public confidence in the Law, and asked how malign actors might be prevented from misusing the technology.

Following the discussion, the Panel took a range of questions from the audience. After the event finished, the panellists took the opportunity to continue the discussion with audience members at a reception in the lobby of the Court.

The Panel discussion is now available to watch on the Court’s YouTube channel.
