Our Energy Use

Government departments are currently competing to save carbon emissions and meet environmental and sustainability pledges. From April 2025, the UKSC will publish information on the amount of energy our building uses.

Carbon saving initiatives

We are making better use of lighting by :

  • continuing with the installation of motion sensors throughout all areas to automatically turn off the lights when a space is unoccupied.
    • improving the response time of motion sensors in office floors.
      • progressing with our initiative to install more energy-efficient LED fixtures across the building.
        • implementing lighting control systems that enable us to reduce the power consumption of our current LED fixtures.

We are ensuring better utilisation of our HVAC (Heating ventilation and air conditioning) by :

          • We are using a BMS (Building Management System) to optimise energy use with real time monitoring, presence sensors, outside air temperature sensors and adaptive timeclocks to ensure that the building is heated and cooled in the most efficient way possible at all times
            • Initiating independent energy surveys and reports to gather further recommendations and initiatives
              • Constantly adapting our stringent PPM (Pre Planned Maintenance) regime taking into account trends highlighted within our buildings helpdesk system.
                • Staying informed about new technologies to evaluate their potential integration into our facility.

We are targeting computer energy use by :

                  • Configuring the default printing setting to enable double-sided printing.
                    • Utilizing the energy-saving default settings on computers, monitors, and printers to reduce power consumption.
                      • Implementing secure follow-me printing allows individuals to avoid printing a cover page to distinguish their documents.
                        • Acquiring energy-efficient equipment for use in the courtroom.

We are targeting carbon footprints by :

                          • Participating in the replanting initiative with Xerox, which plants a tree for every equivalent amount of paper consumed.
                            • Properly recycle electronic waste in accordance with WEEE guidelines.
                              • Recycling toner cartridges.

We are ensuring that our building plant and equipment is only used when needed, including, turning off all but essential systems on weekends/bank holidays whilst allowing for our 24/7 security staff.
